Why indoor air problems amplify on a yacht, boat or any marine vessel and how can we control them?

The conditions inside a boat present different challenges and issues to those of say an office or other building. Naturally, boats are exposed to a significantly higher degree of moisture, a wide variation of temperatures, and numerous other factors that provide the perfect atmosphere for problems such as mold, bacteria and other allergens to flourish. Although not obvious to the human eye, the air inside any boat contains a lot of pollutants, somewhere in the region of 2 to 5 times more contaminants, and according to the Environmental Protection Agency in severe cases anywhere up to 100 times more. When you read these statistics, it is important to realize the scale of the potential problem, and why it is critical to be aggressive and intentional when dealing with these issues.

Symptoms of Mold and Bacteria on a Boat

Whether for work or pleasure, the last thing you want is for your boat to cause it’s passengers health problems, but left untreated that is exactly what can happen. There are such a wide variety of health issues that poor air quality can cause, and it would be impossible to list them all here, but a few examples include irritation of eyes, nose, and throat, dizziness, nausea, and tiredness.

Another more concerning problem that is prevalent in boats is that of Listeria. Listeria benefits from certain conditions that can be prevalent in boats, such as a cold, damp atmosphere, with poor drainage and lots of moisture.

Types of Mold and Bacteria on a Boat

Staph Bacteria, which is more commonly referred to as a flesh eating virus, has regularly been found on boats, and finally without wishing to scare anyone, the Norwalk Virus which spreads particularly on cruise liners from any contaminated surface to human hands or mouth.

Although there is no definitive way to confirm it, there is a high probability that not all of the symptoms are immediately apparent. Some health issues can develop over long periods of time, perhaps even years, but can be traced back to exposure to certain conditions or pollutants many years previously. These include serious and life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, asthma, heart disease and even sterility. The importance of dealing with any potential problems, and eliminating them at source cannot be underestimated.
